Our School

The Harbour School is a special school for children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.  The School was founded in 2007 and has built its ethos around ensuring that every child and young person is given the skills and opportunity to succeed.
We endeavour to provide the best possible opportunities for our learners with the School taking a child-centred approach, placing importance on:
  • building confidence, self-esteem and independence
  • developing and promoting positive relationships with staff, other learners and parents
  • improving individual academic success
  • improving social and emotional skills
In order to facilitate the growth of our learners the School promotes positive working relationships with parents and carers as well as maintaining successful collaboration with other partner organisations.
Our Services
The Harbour School consists of a number of services and is more than the typical education provision.  The Schools offer can be broken down into the following:
BESD Provision
  • On site education provision for learners from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4 with primarily behavioural needs.
  • Our Near 2 School project supports learners identified at Key Stage 3.  Learners are currently in mainstream provision but are either identified as being vulnerable and/or are at risk of exclusion.  The project offers a specific curriculum which focuses on self-esteem, social skills, anger management and effective communication.
Medical Provision
  • On site education provision for learners from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4 with Asperger's and ASD spectrum.
  • Our School offers Individual Tuition provision for all learners with social and emotional needs and/or with physical medical needs.
  • Our Young Parent Support Service has been specifically developed to support school aged learners who are pregnant or are expectant fathers.  The service focuses on the individual needs of the young people to help them achieve positive outcomes and support for becoming young parents.
  • The School runs a Hospital Classroom within the Queen Alexandra Hospital.  This provision supports all school aged young people with their education whilst in the care of the hospital.
Outreach Services
  • Our Multi-Agency Behaviour Support Service offers a range of support to schools, all school aged learners and their families.  The service offers training and support to all groups focusing on areas such as behaviour change management, social and emotional skills development, anger management and support for loss and bereavement.
  • Key Stage 4 learners within mainstream schools can access our Targeted Mentoring Support Service.  This provision offers an alternative curriculum for learners whilst accessing support and guidance from our dedicated mentors.

The Harbour School prides itself that by working in partnership with mainstream provision, families and carers we are able to provide opportunities for learners to access education and further develop their social and emotional well-being regardless of their life circumstances.
